Research > Research Groups
The great research strengths in Earth Sciences at Bristol have always been the truly collegiate mentality fostered by a fluid grouping of research activities, and the emphasis on excellence and interdisciplinarity.
Whilst research in the department is loosely sub-divided into six groups, each comprising researchers working in a single sub-discipline, these groups operate primarily as administrative units: as vehicles for mentoring junior staff, and as the starting point for collaborative initiatives. The principal role of the leader of each group is to co-ordinate activity within and between groups, and to set research agendas through group discussions. Groups have frequent meetings - in some concerned with laboratory matters, in others amounting to an informal research forum, often with external speakers.
Many groups have overlapping needs in terms of space, expertise and resources and, as a consequence of our recruitment strategy, individuals are not constrained to work within particular research areas. As a result, there is considerable interaction between groups, and their looseness provides an excellent basis for interdisciplinary research. There are also sub-groups, within the major groupings where research is concentrated on particular themes.
Each of the research groups has its own web site:
