My current work concentrates on a recent rifting episode and eruption in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia which offers a unique and timely opportunity to study the transition from continental break-up to seafloor spreading in an active setting. Using a variety of seismological techniques I will image the crust and mantle beneath Afar. This will provide a 3-D snapshot of the lithospheric structure, and will enable some constraints to be placed on the location of melt in this region. The presence of anisotropy beneath the rift wil be investigated enabling constraints to be placed on the mechanisms of break-up involved in the rifting process.
