My research focuses on the diversity, ecology and climatic significance of terrestrial ecosystems through deep time. I am particularly interested in the Carboniferous rainforests that persisted during the last Icehouse climate mode and the bizarre Cretaceous polar forests that flourished during the subsequent Greenhouse climate mode. Understanding how vegetation responded to forcing during extreme intervals of the Earth’s climatic history is important for constraining the probable long-term effects of global warming. For palaeobotany, the past is the key to the future.
