My research focuses on feeding ecology and function in fossil organisms in order to identify patterns in eco-functional diversity through the fossil record. By comparing eco-functional diversity with more traditional diversity measures, such as taxonomic and morphological, it is possible to discover patterns of evolutionary convergence in form and function.
I utilize experimental biomechanics techniques such as materials testing and fracture mechanics as well as theoretical techniques based on computer modeling and FEA. My current work focuses on the early diversity of dental tools amongst Devonian and Carboniferous fossil fishes with particular focus on aspects of placoderm feeding function.
