Outreach
The School is regularly involved in outreach and public engagement activities for adults and children. These take the form of public lectures, exhibitions (including activities for Science Week) - sometimes in collaboration with Bristol City Museum.
Whilst the Bristol Dinosaur project has probably received most publicity (and won an "engagement award" at the University's Learning and Teaching exhibition), staff and postgraduate students from Earth Sciences have also visited schools to talk about a whole range of Earth Science topics - from volcanoes to global warming. Staff have also taught at summer schools for gifted and talented pupils, as well as at those aimed at widening participation.
We also use the web as a means of engaging the wider public in various aspects of the subject, and in making good quality teaching materials available to educators (links below each open in a new window):-
- The Geology Museum, University of Bristol - work experience placements and volunteer opportunities, themed educational sets of fossils and rocks for schools, behind the scenes tours.
- Palaeontology PhD Blog - Benjamin Moon, who has recently started a PhD on Ichthyosaurs, is writing a blog to document his time at The University of Bristol.
- Dinobase - an online dinosaur database and discussion group. Look at the dinosaur picture gallery, and send in your dinosaur questions.
- The Bristol Dinosaur Project - all about Thecodontosaurus, a real dinosaur from Bristol, with palaeontology resource packs for Key Stages 1-4
- Your Planet Earth - a resource for teachers and others communicating Earth science topics to pupils aged 14-15, developed in the School and launched by the Geologists Association and the Geological Society
