Some frequently asked questions about applying for a PhD

When should I apply?

Applications for research degrees are welcome at any time of year, but decisions on our main sources of funding for PhDs are only made at specific times.  Thus there is typically an annual cycle of new PhD project posted on the web in October followed by interviews and decisions from January to April.

The following closing dates are important if you plan to apply for a PhD funded via the University of Bristol:

UK students who would like to apply for a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) studentship should apply before the end of January.

Overseas students who plan to apply for an Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) should apply before the end of December.  Final decisions are likely to be made in March.

EU students are eligible to apply for a University of Bristol Scholarship and should apply before the end of February.  Final decisions are likely to be made in May.

When are interviews held?

Applicants for departmental NERC funded studentships and UK based students may be invited to interview.  These are held in February and March.

How does the selection process work?

Most funded studentships are assigned to the best applicants rather than to specific projects. Applications are assessed as soon as possible after we receive them and are ranked by merit.  Interviews for Research Council studentships are offered broadly in ranking order, and some offers are made very soon after interview.  Occasionally, however, some offers may be made in April or even May.

What should I do if I have enquiries about a project?

Do contact the relevant supervisor via email if you have specific questions about the list of PhD research projects that are currently available. Please attach your CV with your application and specify which project interests you.

If you have an idea for a research topic, or would like to develop a project in collaboration with a supervisor, you are welcome to contact him or her via email.  If you need any help in finding the right person, please contact Postgraduate Admissions (earth-postgrad@bris.ac.uk)

What English Language qualification do I need?

If English is not your first language, please note that in addition to any scientific entry requirements by the time you begin your PhD you should have an English qualification such as TOEFL at 603 or IELTS at 6.5 or above.  See http://www.bris.ac.uk/university/governance/policies/admissions-english-lang-reqs.html - toc03

When can I start my PhD?

The majority of research students, begin their studies on 1 October, although it is possible to start at other times by arrangement.
