PhD by research

Bristol Earth Sciences has a community of PhD students undertaking research in the areas in which our staff has internationally recognised expertise. These students have unfettered access to research facilities and are supported, not only by their supervisors and the broader academic staff, but also by the postdoctoral researchers alongside whom they work. In this dynamic and research-focused environment, there is no shortage of the help and support, mentoring and camaraderie that you will want during the course of your PhD by research.

Our existing PhD students are undertaking research in diverse fields, some with "blue skies" aims, others focussed on applied problems such as carbon sequestration, or social issues such as risk associated with natural hazards.  You can find out more about research being conducted by our current research students.

The central aims of PhD study are to acquire: expert knowledge in a specialised field; training in research methods; and the ability to design, implement and report on an independent research project. We also recognise the need for broader skills training, which we provide through specialist courses, as well as by opening the advanced level Masters taught units to our PhD students.

We welcome applications from those holding, or working for, first degrees in Earth science subjects, physics, chemistry, mathematics, materials, biology and related subjects.  We are also happy to devise projects with you, if you have specific interests that we share. You can find out more about the research interests of the staff.

We have studentships for UK citizens funded by NERC, as well as scholarships for EU citizens, but we are also open to candidates who can attract their own funding.
